Abdominal Exploratory

An abdominal exploratory is a surgical procedure conducted on pets to explore and resolve issues that lie within their abdominal cavity. It is typically decided when non invasive diagnostic techniques such as imaging fail to provide sufficient information. Hearing your pet may need an invasive surgery can be nerve-racking for pet owners, and our veterinary staff strives to make the experience proceed as smoothly as possible.

Why do an exploratory?

  1. Internal damage caused by trauma from severe accidents may warrant an laparotomy for a veterinarian to assess and repair any damage.
  2. Unknown causes of persistent symptoms such as chronic vomiting, abdominal pain, weight loss all may require further investigation of the internal abdomen. Radiographs, bloodwork, and ultrasounds would be conducted prior to identifying a cause, but if no answers come from them an exploratory may be needed.
  3. Removal of tumors and obtaining biopsies from internal organs. The pre diagnostics can identify the presence of one then surgery will be required to biopsy and/or remove it.
  4. Foreign body material that has been ingested and cannot be induced through emesis. Common signs that your pet has ingested a foreign object that they are unable to digest include: vomiting, weight loss, lethargy, abdominal tenderness, decreased appetite, and certain changes in behavior. Time is of the essence if you are suspicious that your pet has eaten something that obstructs their digestive tract, in these cases this is a lifesaving procedure.

After your pet has undergone an abdominal exploratory procedure, our goal is to ensure their comfort and promote a smooth recovery. The Rock Creek Veterinary medical staff will provide specific post-operative care instructions tailored to your pet’s needs. Follow the instructions carefully, including the use of an e-collar, medication administration, wound care, and activity restrictions.
